Understanding Towing Services

Times When You May Need A Tow Truck For Your Car

When you need to move your car and can't drive it to the destination you need it to go to, the best option is typically to have the vehicle towed. Towing services can vary, and the reason for towing your car can influence the type of tow truck you need.

Vehicle Breakdowns

The most common reason that people need a towing company to tow their car is that the vehicle has broken down along the road, and they can't get it running again. The towing company can take your vehicle to a repair shop in the area, or if you have a shop you always use, they can take it there for you.

Most of the time, a car that will not start or stay running can be towed with a standard tow truck, but if something is going on with the vehicle that requires a flatbed or rollback truck to lift the car and transported it on the bed, let the towing service know so that can send the correct truck your location. The dispatcher will ask about the nature of the breakdown before they send anyone out, so if you are not sure what type of truck is needed, they will determine it from your answers.

Transferring A Vehicle

If you need to move your car from one shop to another for repairs to be completed, but you cannot drive the vehicle in its current condition, a towing service can come and get the car and transport it for you. One example of this can be if the vehicle needs to go to an engine or transmission shop but is currently at a body shop.

The towing company will send a truck over to the shop and pick the vehicle up and transfer it to the location your need it to be. If the car needs to be covered or protected against weather and road debris while it is being moved, you can put a car cover over the vehicle once it is on the tow truck, but be sure to secure it so the wind can't pull it off as the truck is moving.

Delivering A New Purchase

Some situations require towing a car that is running and drivable. One example might be a new vehicle purchase that involves a classic or collector car. The vehicle could be running perfectly, but to preserve the vehicle's value, you may not want to put a lot of miles on it.

A towing company that offers custom towing may have an enclosed car trailer that will protect the car and allow it to be moved a considerable distance. Not every towing service will offer this type of transportation, but many do, and most of them will advertise the service. To learn more, contact a towing company.
