5 Tips For Getting Your Construction Equipment Ready For Transport

With most construction equipment, you cannot drive the equipment down the road to your next construction site. Instead, you need to load the equipment up onto a large trailer in order to transport it to your next work site. Before you load up your construction equipment, there are a few things that you need to do to make sure that it is ready to be safely transported to your new job site.

Clean Your Machines

Before you load up your equipment, give it a good washing. Dirt on your equipment can make it harder to spot and find the tie-down and handhold points on your vehicle. It is also nice to start a new job with some clean equipment. Additionally, having a clean vehicle makes it easier for you to make sure that your vehicle doesn't get damaged during the transportation process. If it does get damaged, you are more likely to spot the damage when your vehicle is clean. Always take the time to hose down and wash off your equipment before you transport it.

Cover the Smokestacks

When your equipment is being transported, you don't want debris to get into the smokestacks on your large pieces of equipment. That is why you should take the time to cover up your smokestacks before you transport your equipment. Just remember to uncover the smoke stacks before you move the equipment again; a clogged smoke stack could be problematic.

Disconnect the Battery

Next, you should disconnect the battery on all the equipment that is being moved. You don't want the battery to get drained during the moving process. This is just an extra precaution, but one worth taking. You don't want to reach your worksite only discover that you have a dead battery.

Make Sure the Doors are Latched

After that, make sure that the doors are properly latched. Your equipment can come in contact with a lot of wind while it is being transported; you don't want the doors to fly open. If your doors don't properly latch, you should secure them with some zip ties to ensure that the doors don't swing open during transport.

Get the Right Signage

Finally, make sure that you have the right signage on your equipment. Even if you are using a company to transport your equipment, the equipment is still your responsibility, so you need to make sure that the signage is right on your equipment.

When transporting your construction equipment to a new site, be sure to clean up the equipment, cover the smokestack, disconnect the battery and latch the doors.
