Understanding Towing Services

3 Things To Do Before Having An Abandoned Vehicle Towed From Your Business Property

When parking space at your place of business is limited, having an abandoned vehicle taking up a place in your lot can be a major nuisance. Thankfully, most towing services can come and retrieve the vehicle and deliver it to the local impound lot until the rightful owner shows up to claim their property. Yet, having a vehicle towed from your business property is not something that you can take lightly. Take a look at a few things that you do need to do before you call up a towing service to have the vehicle pulled out of the way.

Jot down some information about the vehicle.

Before you call to have the vehicle towed, it is a good idea to take note of a few important things about the vehicle. If anything ever comes up, you will have this information on hand and ready to go. If someone comes back to the place of business looking for a certain vehicle, it will always be helpful to know if the vehicle you had towed is the one they are referring to. Take note of information like:

  • when you noticed the vehicle was abandoned
  • how long it has been on your property
  • the make, model, and description of the vehicle
  • the license plate number
  • any identifiable damage, modifications, or markings on the vehicle

Contact the local authorities before having the vehicle towed.

Before you call a towing service, it is best to get in touch with the local authorities about the abandoned vehicle. It is not at all uncommon for vehicles to be abandoned when the owner is involved in a crime or comes up missing. The last thing you want to do is tow a vehicle that could be an important clue to some kind of local investigation. Therefore, reaching out to the local authorities to ask for information about the vehicle and provide details is important.

Check local regulations on towing vehicles.

You definitely do not want to have a vehicle towed from your business property and then end up with fines because you did something wrong. In some states, if you do not have a sign in place warning drivers that their vehicle could be towed after a certain period, you will have to leave the vehicle in place for a certain amount of time before it can legally be towed away. Check with your local DMV or DOT to find out if there are any regulations in your area.
